Nash County Pollinator Symposium 2024

The second annual Nash County Pollinator Symposium was a real hit. This even was ran by the Nash County Master Gardeners at the Nash County Arboretum. It lasted approximately three hours and it included guest speakers, refreshments, multiple raffled items as well as plants.

I had the pleasure of photographing the event as well as helping in other ways as I am currently an intern master gardener. This was the first time I attended this symposium and I feel it was well worth attending. Everyone that attended had a great time and superb information was passed down from not only the guest speakers but also through conversation among the guests.

The guest speakers included Bryce H. Lane, Hannah K. Levenson, and Lior Carlson. Bryce Lane is a horticulturist with his BS and MS in that field. He spoke about attracting wildlife to your garden and about some of the current myths or incorrect information being passed around about native vs non-native plant species.

Hannah Levenson holds her PHD in entomology and biology (co-major) as well as a BSc in environmental technology and management as well as a BA in design studies. She is a well known bee expert with superb proficiency in researching both native bees and honey bees both stateside and internationally. She spoke about native bees, technical research information regarding them, and the things they do to survive (and how to aid their process)

Lior Carlson holds a BS in biology as well as an MA in applied behavioral science. Lior is also one of the founders of Backyardbutterflies, a non-profit organization. He is very active in the butterfly and moth community where he organizes various events for research, citizen scientist, and community purposes. Lior spoke about both butterflies and moths and the current dilemmas they face in this environment.
